Popular tour questions # 3 - do you wear anything under your kilt?!

The history of the modern kilt begins in the 16th century and was originally a large piece of cloth wrapped around the whole body. Today’s kilt is the bottom half of that get up.

The tradition of ‘going commando’ seems to have originated in the 18th century Highland regiments as a symbol of toughness and independence but many have carried it forward today, mostly for a laugh, but some kilt wearers definitely are ‘true Scotsmen’ and genuinely find it quite liberating. Watch out for the midges though!

Most of our guides enjoy wearing the kilt and there’s no doubt it’s a handsome piece of kit which is truly Scottish!
