 Mercat Cross – tour departure point

The walking tour begins at the Mercat Cross (Market Cross), the medieval gathering point where important information was announced to the citizens of Edinburgh.  More famously it was also a place of execution where the city mob thoroughly enjoyed the free ‘entertainment’ of blood, guts and gore, of which there was plenty!

You will hear horrific tales about criminals’ ears being nailed to the Cross, cruel punishments and other torture before being lead by a costumed guide through the dark alleyways of Old Edinburgh to further experience the sights and sounds of ‘Auld Reekie’ (the ‘old smoky’ town of Edinburgh).

Blair Street Vaults

The tour visits the shadowy closes where ghosts still cling to ancient sites and descends into the famously haunted Blair Street Vaults, underground caverns created when two huge bridges were built to connect different parts of this historic city.

This entertaining evening finishes with a convivial drink and further spooky tales in an atmospheric tavern.
