Day 1 - Edinburgh to Plockton
Dunkeld, Killiecrankie Gorge, Laggan, Ben Nevis viewpoint, Eilean Donan Castle
Crossing the River Forth we see the Forth Rail Bridge - it amazed the world when it was completed in 1890 and has become an enduring symbol of Scotland’s engineering heritage.
First stop is the delightful village of Dunkeld with a history stretching back to the 9th Century. Time to explore the ancient cathedral grounds and take a walk through mature woodland to the mighty River Tay. We continue north and stop briefly at the Pass of Killiecrankie. Heather moorland and mountain views surround us as we drive towards Cairngorms National Park and Laggan, an area favoured by movie makers because of its wild mountain scenery and misty lochs.
We follow the Great Glen to Invergarry, stopping for a photo of Scotland’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis. After spectacular Highland scenery photos at Loch Garry we travel onwards through stunning Glen Shiel (Five Sisters of Kintail) to Eilean Donan Castle.
This castle is perhaps the most iconic image of Highland Scotland and has been used as the backdrop for countless famous movies.
It is perfectly situated on an island, surrounded by water and awesome scenery. A ‘must-see’ Scottish castle!
Our base for two nights is the picturesque west Highland conservation village of Plockton.
Its location, close to the North Atlantic Drift (Gulf Stream), ensures an unusually mild climate for the north of Scotland, hence the palm trees growing along the main street!
Day 2
- Isle of Skye
 |
Iron Age Broch, Neist Point Lighthouse OR Dunvegan Castle OR Coral Beach, Portree, Lealt Waterfall, Duntulm Castle |
Scenic drive past the magnificent Cuillin Mountains - a range of rocky peaks which dominate Skye. We stop for a short walk at a 2000 year old roundhouse (Broch) at Dun Beag.
Depending on the weather and time of year we will visit Dunvegan Castle, the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland, or drive to the lighthouse at Neist Point (spectacular views to the Western Isles), or maybe even swim at the Coral Beaches. Lunch is in Portree, the island capital.
In the afternoon we continue to Trotternish with its unique and unusual rock architecture. Stops and photos at Kilt Rock, the Quiraing and Duntulm Castle. We may even have time to explore the Fairy Glen - a bizarre and delightful miniature landscape (home of the ‘wee people’!).
There are plenty of opportunities to take many short walks to explore some or all of the above. The length of each depends on the weather, time available, the interest level and of fitness of the group etc.
Return to Plockton for second night.
Day 3
- Plockton to Inverness
Loch Carron, Torridon, Kinlochewe, Rogie Falls, Inverness
We continue our tour of the north-west Highlands towards Achnasheen and Kinlochewe by driving through Torridon, one of the most awe-inspiring, wilderness areas of Britain. We stop at the viewpoint over Loch Carron before continuing this spectacular scenic drive alongside steep sided mountains and sparkling sea lochs - one of the highlights of this five day tour.
We stop at Rogie Falls, a woodland walk and salmon leap beautifully situated at a waterfall on the Blackwater River. The gentle walking trails pass through mixed woodland which provides varied habitats for a wide range of plants and animals including the elusive pine marten, wildcat and red squirrel.
Our overnight stay is the northernmost city of the United Kingdom and pretty capital of the Highlands, Inverness. There are numerous pubs, cafés and restaurants for evening entertainment.
Day 4 - Inverness to Oban
Loch Ness, Commando Memorial, Glen Coe, Oban
Our first stop is famous Loch Ness - Scotland’s legendary lake - best known for the alleged sightings of a monster. We will have time for a boat trip on the loch. Lunch is in Fort Augustus at the southerly tip of Loch Ness after which you will have the opportunity to walk by the shores of the loch or along the canal and lock system, built by Thomas Telford in the early 1800s.
We continue along the Great Glen (to the Commando Memorial and Ben Nevis viewpoint) and onwards to perhaps the most famous of all Scotland’s glens – Glen Coe.
This narrow valley is where the bloody massacre of the MacDonalds took place in 1692 - one of the most notorious acts in Scotland’s long and violent history. Time for photos of the wild, evocative scenery.
Our scenic drive along the rugged west coast takes us past Castle Stalker. Like Eilean Donan this fortress was built on a small island and remains one of the classic images of Highland Scotland.
Overnight is in the bustling port of Oban, ‘Gateway to the Isles’ and seafood capital of Scotland. Enjoy panoramic views of mountains, lochs and islands from the High Street!
Day 5 - Oban to Edinburgh
Kilchurn Castle, Inveraray, Rest and Be Thankful, Loch Lomond, the National Wallace Monument
Our scenic drive along the banks of Loch Awe takes us to Kilchurn Castle, an ancestral castle of Clan Campbell and one of the most photographed in Scotland. Its dramatic location makes it an essential part of a Highland sightseeing tour!
We drive to the picturesque village of Inveraray on the shores of Loch Fyne before stopping to admire the fantastic view at the ‘Rest and Be Thankful’, so named because of the words inscribed on a stone at the top of the hill after weary soldiers built the road in 1753.
Loch Lomond is the largest lake in Britain by surface area, immortalised in the world-famous song ‘The Bonnie Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond’. ‘Bonnie’ means pretty so it’s no surprise to see a beautiful lake containing 30+ islands. No visit to Scotland would be complete without seeing our ‘queen of lochs’.
As we approach the Lowlands and Stirling you will learn about Scotland’s great patriot William Wallace whose name has resounded through British history for 700 years. We stop at his National Monument, a fitting conclusion to a wonderful trip!
Return to Edinburgh Sunday Evening by 7pm.
